Modern grunge... If you look today, Johnny Dep mixes his style with boho-chic, hipsterism and a touch of humor and intellectual preppy. But if you look closely ... There is an opinion that we owe it to him that we owe the return of grunge to the catwalks and street fashion.

He was the #1 grunge style icon in the 90s. Are the 90s coming back?

Johnny then:

Johnny now:

A lot of London street fashion adepts show borrowing from the 90s. From star couples of the past, such as Johnny and Kate Moss, mysterious, daring, luxurious, to the present day. What makes you go back to the past?

Johnny and Kate in the 90s:

And they are today:

And some young Keanu Reeves:

And he is today:

The fashion of the 90s was "anti-fashion", it was a grunge look, tousled hair, makeup "death of a pioneer" or vice versa, no makeup, black lips, spiked jewelry, boots, men's T-shirts, hats, long chiffon dresses, old sweaters and flannel shirts, denim vests and ripped jeans… It was a generation of real supermodels: Naomi Campbell, Claudia Schiffer, Kate Moss, Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista and others.

Cindy Crawford and Claudia Slate in the 90s:

Gianni Versace, Linda Evangelista, Carla Bruni and Karen Mulder

Gianni Versace and supermodels:

This was the Beverly Hills generation, the first teens (namely, teens, not youth idols) from the series. The girls had a wide range of role models. You could choose between Nirvana and glamour.

Here is a typical school-student style in the USA, it was also popular (adjusted for geography and the time of arrival of this fashion) with us.

"Chemistry" and bouffant are gradually going out of fashion, being replaced by elongated strands and a smooth sheen. True, this did not apply to the USSR. The bangs are straight, up to the eyebrows, often with a pile, dyeing is popular in radical colors: blond, black, red (paint color "Ruby"). What we're seeing here is now referred to as "best not to wear": oversized blazers like Kelly's, or tight-fitting jersey dresses like Brenda's, mini-bottoms and cut-outs at the same time, like Donna's. It's not fashionable. And what then did bloggers take from the 90s street?

This picture is more vital: colorful dresses, curls, a combination of a shirt and jeans, as on the left, an actual belt of shorts and a cropped top - in this form, Kelly will pass for a fashion blogger today. The combination of a striped T-shirt and a miniskirt is too ordinary, and again the rule works - an open top and a bottom do not look together. Not because it is vulgar, but because it visually lengthens the neck and legs, and shortens the torso. This makes the girl shorter than she really is.

It's fine here on the left on Donna, fine on the right on Kelly. Brenda, alas, by.

These swimsuits are also back in fashion:

Pay attention to the length of the midi and socks - this is a hot trend (if you replace the bag and replace the sweater with a more formative one, you will get a set in the style of modern minimalism):

Beverly Hills - Brenda (totally in the modern trend)

Beverly Hills - Donna (similar)

Beverly Hills - Kelly (combines sheer, shorts and modern fashion for grooming and sportiness). Today, the shorts are slightly longer, with lapels, more baggy. And the lace shirt is not knitted, but made of textile lace. But the ideas are borrowed from there.

In the 90s, these three girls were no less popular than in the 2000s the heroines of Sex and the City.

The most persistent admirers of the glamor of the 90s are, at the moment, the Kardashian sisters (in the recent past, also Victoria Beckham).

At the presentation of his own collection. Pay attention - the "leopard" is back.

And maybe the pendulum of fashion takes us to extremes every 20 years, but right now London's street fashion is showing the neo-grunge trend. A variety of tricks and details from the 90s never cease to amaze the imagination of the public and work as an inspiration for young dandies and fashionistas. The main difference between grunge now is that it has become glamorous. Accurate. Rock - but luxury style. Gothic and dark - but graceful, feminine. Strict and strong - but minimalist.

And now a new trend is moving from the streets to the catwalks: in 2012.

Dsquared 2012 SS promo:

The company releases the SS2012 collection, which revisits the underground and the special sexual overtones of 90s grunge. Kate and Johnny are still style icons. And it seems that the influence of the 90s on the development of fashion trends today is still preserved. Otherwise, how to explain normocore?

What are the main "chips" and tricks that fashion bloggers now borrow straight from there, from the 90s? Denim jackets, leather jackets, hats, rough boots, oversized coats and oversized sweaters are all direct quotes. Yes, the coat is of a different style. And it matches with another hat. But the principle is the same - anti-fashion.

This is how fashionistas look on the streets of London in 2012-2013.

Hoodies, tights and boots:

Hats and leopard:

Lace and black lingerie, black tights, boots:

And so - celebrities in 2012-2014, influenced by trends:

Alice Dellal

Rihanna (it is clear that she is inspired by Michael Jackson. But it looks like ...)

Kiara in ultra-trendy shorts: note the length from the 90s.

Jessica Alba in a denim jacket (a mixture of denim trend and leather jackets):

Keira Knightley in a jacket - a direct quote from the 90s (this is a complete retro look, she may even have overdone it, pay attention to the shoes):

Kristen Stewart wears dark glasses (however very fashionable), a leather jacket and the image of a rocker girl:

But Kylie Minogue is probably just remembering the past (this oversized shirt, as if from the shoulder of a car mechanic, fishnet tights... also too obvious quoting, the image is more for a girl, but Kylie does not give up)

Rita Opa is completely "in trend", starting with her hair, ending with a shirt on her belt. Ripped knees and a denim shirt (similar sold at asos.com) included:

Nikki Hilton and flannel shirt:

Camilla Corazon shows a master class on the combination of lengths:

Pay attention to the boots: they add height, but hide under the skirt.

The following elements of the 90s are especially popular today: beanie hats, boots, black torn tights, shorts, jeans jackets and shirts, plaid shirts, black and dark varnishes, eyeliners, lipsticks.

Unpopular: Loose blouses, banana pants (although they come with last-this season, but the style is slightly different), bouffant and varnished hair, bright shadows combined with bright lipstick (one thing).

Grunge is a style of rock music that became popular in the 90s thanks to bands like Nirvana and Soundgarden. Over time, grunge as a style spread more and more and became something of a way of life. Becoming a grunge girl requires not only listening to certain music, but also dressing and acting accordingly. After reading this article and making some changes, you can become a real grunge girl very quickly.

Steps

Clothing: top

Buy a plaid shirt. The most important element in a grunge girl's outfit is a plaid shirt - in the 90s, this look could be seen in almost all television series! For example, Angela Chase and Ryan Graff from My So-Called Life always wore plaid shirts. However, try to stay away from bright colors. Give preference to colors such as brown, red, burgundy, black, gray, mustard, dark green. Your shirt should be a couple of sizes larger. Remember that a distinctive feature of this style is deliberate wear (up to holes).

Wear a T-shirt with your favorite band on it. Since grunge is originally a musical genre, a T-shirt with the image of your favorite band will be just a must-have item, just like in the wardrobe of Winona Ryder - a true icon of the grunge style of the 90s. Look for T-shirts featuring popular 90s bands like Nirvana, Silverchair, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam or Stone Temple Pilots.

Put on a short top. Although grunge is predominantly a masculine style, you are still a girl and can make your look more feminine by slightly exposing the skin on your stomach. This style was popular in the 90s, and Gwen Stefani, lead singer of No Doubt, was a prominent representative of this style. It is not necessary to choose a top - anything your heart desires can be short, from a shirt to a warm sweater. Prefer solid colors - black, gray, white or maroon. However, an unobtrusive drawing is also suitable. The main thing is that the thing is short enough so that your belly is visible.

    • If you can't find a top that is both roomy and short enough, cut off the bottom of any T-shirt. You can deliberately cut unevenly so that the item is more in line with the style you have chosen.
    • You can choose a short top with an asymmetrical hem. This top will go well with a flannel shirt tied around the waist.
  1. Pick a shirt. Grunge is not only oversized clothing. Buy yourself a tight-fitting tank top in white, black, gray, or brown. The tank top will look great with a flannel shirt.

    • Choose a T-shirt with the name of the group if you find one. The shirt you choose can be your size or larger. If you choose a larger tank top, wear it with a black bra - and let the straps dangle off your shoulders!
  2. Choose a dress. Like all girls, from time to time the grunge girl wants to take a break from the masculine style. Babydoll dresses with a floral pattern will suit you. Opt for neutral and natural earthy tones. Grunge of the 90s is a mixture of styles and a generous dose of irony. Most importantly, do not forget to throw a flannel shirt over the dress in order to turn from a good girl into a grunge girl.

    Clothing: bottom

    1. Wear baggy jeans with holes or patches. One of the hallmarks of grunge style is comfort. Agree, there is nothing more comfortable than a pair of frayed baggy jeans. Buy jeans a size or two larger than you usually buy. Avoid tight skinny jeans: they are too tight and not suitable for grunge girls. Try to find jeans with patches or holes. Frayed old jeans are a great option for a grunge girl.

Buy an A-line skirt. If you don't like wearing dresses, try a printed A-line skirt. Thanks to Liv Tyler (Aerosmith videos, films like Empire Store) this style became popular. Pick up a skirt of soothing colors in a flower or in a cage.

Wear overalls. Denim jumpsuits were very popular in the 90s among grunge fans. Purchase a jumpsuit and wear it with a T-shirt or tank top. Alternatively, you can wear a flannel shirt over it or at the waist.

      • You can also try wearing a jumpsuit with one strap. Instead of fastening both straps, leave one unbuttoned and tuck it under your overalls. This option looks great with a crop top and a flannel shirt.
    2. Wear torn tights or stockings. If you don't like wearing jeans all the time, wear torn tights or stockings to complete your grunge look. Courtney Love often wore a dress with ripped tights. Buy tights in a neutral color or with a pattern. As with jeans, poke a few holes in them. Wear these tights with a skirt or dress. You can also wear them under jeans.

      • You can wear several tights at the same time with holes in different places. If you choose tights in different colors or patterns, your grunge outfit will become more expressive.

    finishing touches

    1. Use a minimum of decorative cosmetics. Grunge style is, first of all, comfort and a minimum of effort. Consider this principle when doing makeup. Combine some shades of brown or other dark shade with wide eyeliner and mascara. You need a somewhat casual smokey eye makeup, but not too much careless. You can also do without decorative cosmetics at all.

Change your hair color. You can change the color of the hair completely or dye only the lower part of it. Try these shades: dark red, maroon, light ash, brown or caramel. If you're ready to drastically change your look, how about pastel pink, purple or blue? The most important thing is that the color you choose is not too bright.

Wear combat boots. Grungers wear mostly combat boots. Suitable colors would be black, maroon, gray or brown. You can even buy patterned shoes. Combat boots make the grunge look even more informal and comfortable. You can wear them with a T-shirt, a floral skirt, a flannel shirt around the waist and a pair of holey tights for an irresistible look.

Wear a beanie. A great way to complete your grunge look is to wear a knitted beanie. Actress Drew Barrymore made this accessory popular by wearing it with a plaid shirt and ripped jeans. Wear a hat in black, grey, brown or dark red. You can hide your hair under a cap or let it out. The hat can be worn with almost any hairstyle.

      • If you don't like to wear beanies, bring a bandana. This is also in grunge style, but here you will have a wider choice of colors and patterns. In addition, in warm weather, a bandana is more comfortable.
    2. Add accessories. Accessories will add zest to your look. Liv Tyler and Gwen Stefani wore matching necklaces and earrings. You can complement your look with a black tattoo choker, a simple cross pendant or large voluminous earrings. You can also wear simple narrow rings, silver or colored, putting a few on each finger.

"Be yourself" - this is the fashion slogan of the last decade of the twentieth century. This slogan was used in the 90s in advertising for Hugo Boss perfumes, as well as in an advertising campaign for the Calvin Klein brand. People on the one hand strove for individuality, and on the other hand they strove to flaunt brand names. At the same time, in the 1990s, convenience was valued more than ever before, but at the same time, colorfulness and even a kind of theatricality were in fashion. Fashion in the 1990s was dictated by both show business stars and supermodels.

Clothing styles and accessories in the 1990s
grunge- a style that appeared as an anti-fashion, but later, penetrating the catwalks, became a fashion. Grunge style is torn jeans, sneakers, leather jackets, flannelette shirts with outstretched elbows, massive heavy boots, in the female version - dimensionless sweaters and baggy men's trousers. On the catwalk in the 90s, grunge was represented, for example, by such a designer as Marc Jacobs. He released a collection of asymmetrical faded T-shirts, wrinkled dresses, deliberately sloppy knitted sweaters and plaid shirts. They used the grunge style in their collections and fashion designers such as Christian Lacroix, Vivienne Westwood.

Minimalism- simplicity of shapes and colors. Collections in the spirit of minimalism in the 1990s were produced by Calvin Klein, Donna Karan. Minimalism in the street fashion of the 1990s is the almost complete absence of accessories, simple jackets, white t-shirts and tops, skinny jeans. Minimalism - the image of Sharon Stone in the film "Basic Instinct".

The influence of electronic dance music on fashion (rave) - shoes on a huge platform, t-shirts with psychedelic prints, bright acid colors, micro minis, completely crazy hairstyles and makeup. Remember, for example, the image of Leela from Luc Besson's The Fifth Element.

sporty chic- the main element of the wardrobe is leggings (then they were called leggings), which are combined with shiny T-shirts, sneakers on a high platform, and dresses and skirts were sometimes worn over them. Sports chic clothing also includes oversized jackets, jackets, shirts, belly-opening tops that could be worn with jeans or high-waisted skirts.

Ethnic motifs in clothes were also in fashion in the 1990s - Chinese, Japanese, Indian, as well as an interest in eco-clothing (the use of natural materials, sewing outfits remade from old clothes, and so on).

As for Russia, and other countries of the former Soviet Union, the fashion of the 1990s was distinguished by its brightness and excess. So, in the 90s they wore a lot of denim - denim jackets, skirts, overalls, sundresses, that is, anything from comfortable denim.

In addition to jeans, they wore, of course, leggings, leggings of the brightest colors. Leather clothes were also in fashion - leather skirts (mini-skirts were considered especially fashionable) and, of course, jackets. Another fashionable hit of the 1990s in the post-Soviet space was tracksuits, which were worn far from the gym.

Tracksuits were worn by everyone - small children, grown men and even girls could go shopping and anywhere. A good sports suit could cost 100-150 dollars, and this was a very significant amount of money in those troubled times. Therefore, the tracksuit has become a desirable garment.

In addition to convenience and “value”, tracksuits have become popular due to the widespread criminalization of our society. In the 1990s, boxers, wrestlers and "masters" of other martial arts gathered in communities with the goal of making money by all means. Very quickly they began to be considered authorities in the eyes of a significant part of society. Someone was afraid of them, others wanted to be like these strong guys themselves, and many girls dreamed of marrying a bandit. All this helped to strengthen the position of tracksuits.

From outerwear, in addition to leather jackets, bolognese jackets, soft “wrinkled” raincoats (as spring and autumn clothes) were also in fashion. In the mid-1990s, raspberry jackets, sweaters with ornaments, flared trousers were in men's fashion, the latter could also be worn by girls.

1990s hairstyles- these are hairstyles with a perm, as well as with fleece. Bangs are in fashion. Plus, the most unexpected bright hair colors were also considered fashionable - hair could even be dyed blue and green. If you didn’t want to dye all your hair, then only some strands could be dyed, and most often only bangs in red, blue and red colors. Mascara could be used as a paint. Hairstyles were decorated with butterfly hairpins and colored rubber bands.

In the make-up, also quite bright, the emphasis was placed on both the eyes and the lips. They used red lipstick, they could use paler shades, but at the same time in combination with a dark pencil. The colors of the shadows are bright, up to bright blue, and the more shadows, the better.

A strong tan comes into fashion, which lasts both in winter and in spring, because tan becomes a symbol of success. If a person can keep a tan in the middle of winter and even in spring, then he or she regularly relaxes on the seas and oceans.

In some cases, the passion for tanning takes perverted forms, and the girls literally live in solariums, due to which they turn into dark mulattos with platinum hair. Sometimes wonderful images succeeded, but more often they were funny, although in the first and second cases, the girls caused great harm to their skin and health in general.

As for the Western fashion for hairstyles, in the 1990s, the main fashion trend was a hairstyle of long, flowing hair, raised at the roots. Other options for hairstyles from long hair were also fashionable - the singer Madonna in the 1990s, for example, wore a ponytail hairstyle. However, preference was still given to short haircuts. In fashion were hairstyles from tight knots and with straight bangs, even and smooth bob haircuts, bob haircuts, boy haircuts, hairstyles with highlights, hairstyles with tousled hair.

Now many condemn that time and look at photographs of the 1990s with laughter, but in fact it is wrong to condemn Russia and Russians of the nineties. It was a troubled time when the greatest empire collapsed - the USSR! People were not adapted to the new life, and besides, the country and the people were robbed by enterprising businessmen and swindlers, who privatized all the promising enterprises built by the peoples of the USSR for nothing.

Enterprises went bankrupt and were sold for a pittance, other enterprises went bankrupt completely so as not to take away market share from foreign competitors, and in all cases, the common people suffered first of all. Many people in those not so distant times could not afford the elementary, for example, cook chicken soup and buy new jeans or a pair of sneakers for a child.

Despite all the difficulties, the Russians tried to dress as best they could, and it should be noted that buying new things in those days gave much more joy than now. In the 1990s, buying a leather jacket for $300 brought a real holiday and gave happiness for many days and even weeks to come! Wearing a new jacket, the girls felt like queens! Everything has changed today. In 2014, I bought 2 leather jackets in one day - black and red, and a little later, even a blue jacket, and this did not turn me into a queen and did not even give me a sense of celebration.

Everything that in the 1990s girls could dream of and not even dream of, today lies in my wardrobe, three fur coats, two sheepskin coats, 5 leather jackets, a lot of boxes with shoes, shelves littered with bags and much more. At the same time, we have forgotten the catastrophic difficulties of the 1990s and are whining about the current crisis, although in reality - I and many other girls simply don’t know what else we can buy, what we lack for happiness ...
